Industry Loss. Julius Shulman Architectural Photographer

Last week the photographic industry lost a great architectural photographer, Julius Shulman, perhaps best known for Pierre Koenig’s Case Study house #22, 1960 (also known as the Stahl Residence), image below. This beautifully-lit shot was actually spur-of-the-moment, and he judged the exposure without a light meter; a testament to his incredible talent.

“The secret to the success of my photography is to always create a proper balance of light. Put your camera down. Don’t act like a photographer; instead, act like a human being reviewing a piece of sculpture and understand where you would like the light to be for your exposure.”
Introduction to his 1962 textbook “Photographing Architecture and Interiors”

Julius Schulman

And here is a short film with Julius narrating a photo documentary about his life and images.

A good coffee-table book of his definitive work can be purchased here.

Short Film. Jonathan Kelsey’s “High”

Short film for shoe designer Jonathan Kelsey’s Fall 2009 collection, directed by Sara Dunlop and starring French actress, Joana Preiss.

Kelsey says about this daring venture:
“Most fashion shorts I’ve seen tend to look great, but can feel like stretched-out adverts. We wanted something with depth, and a genuine narrative . . . the new winter collection [is] dark, loaded with hard edges and rock chick attitude. We wanted the film to reflect this, while pushing the envelope within the genre.”

And it is indeed daring…and bold; as well as beautifully shot and incredibly intriguing. And apparently there’s more to come – I’m on the edge of my seat already.

Why We Love Lara Stone

Lara Stone, has now been a firm favourite on the fashion scene since 2006. She has graced the covers of many magazines and catwalks, culminating in French Vogue dedicating its entire Feb 09 issue to her. And why is she so popular? One reason is certainly her versatility and ability to adapt to any shoot; from sexy and seductive, to young and innocent, to primped and preened. Much like her supermodel predecessors such as Linda Evangelista and Kate Moss, Lara has a chameleon-like talent; more actress than mere model.

And here she is as Karl Lagerfeld’s muse in a short film for Chanel’s Preview Fall 09 collection…

New Release. Olympus Pen E-P1 camera

Olympus has finally released their eagerly anticipated PEN camera. Originally launched in 1959, the new Pen E-P1 doesn’t have a mirror box and is, therefore, as small as a compact camera but delivers SLR quality; it’s so good, it was even launched by David Bailey. With interchangeable lenses and HD film-making ability, what are you waiting for? Available to purchase here.

A great David Bailey book is available in the Focus Hub Shop.

Creative Collaborations. Inez and Vinoodh

Dutch photographers, Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, have been partners in every sense, since meeting in 1986. They mixed their separate fashion design and art backgrounds to create a new wave in fashion/art photography and pushed boundaries using image manipulation, quirky compositions and humour to produce images which have changed the perception of typical fashion photography.

Yohji Yamamoto
Their first foray into advertising was the now iconic Yohji Yamamoto 98 campaign with M/M Paris with Maggie Rizer.

YSL Manifestos
And they are now working, amongst other advertising, on the unique YSL Manifesto seasonal campaigns. These are great ad campaigns with the image book, behind-the-scenes video and free gift, all released simultaneously in major cities on the streets, and on the YSL website. Campaigns have featured some of fashion’s most iconic models such as Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell and Claudia Schiffer.

Chris Cunningham. Video Director

Further to my post about the Gucci Flora ad by Chris Cunningham, video director, I would like to tell you about my experience with him. I shot this image of Chris in 1998 – it was when he had just shot the Madonna ‘Frozen’ video (below) and was seriously smokin’ in the industry. This photo was originally for i-D magazine, but has subsequently been published in Surface, UK Vogue, and to this day, 11 years later, Chris continues to request it as a publicity shot. Recently, I’ve been talking to Chris about him using it as his official photo, as this image is the only one of himself he’s been really happy with.

Chris_C

It was a typically grey London morning when myself, my assistant (now my wife) and some equipment (my trusted Hasselblad 503 and Profoto 7B) turned up to shoot Chris at Black Dog Films, not knowing what to expect. Very charmingly, Chris came out to meet us on the street and took us inside. We had to set up in a backroom with just a plain, white wall as a backdrop. Not the most ideal circumstances for a brilliant portrait shoot, but nonetheless I persevered. The result you see here was all in camera, composed and framed there and then. A completely captured moment.

We spent the rest of the day hanging out with Chris, shooting pool in the offices and watching MTV. By the end of the day, he even showed us his latest video at the time, Aphex Twin’s ‘Windowlicker’, before its official release.

The message of this story? Despite the seemingly limited circumstances, never underestimate opportunities and always make the most of every chance. You never know where today’s ‘quick shoot’ may take you in the future and who you may meet along the way.

This is for the Disco Science track from the 2000 Mirwais ‘Production’ album; you can purchase a special edition cd & dvd here.

And this art film in 2002, ‘Acqua Nastasa’, featuring Natasa Vojnovic.

A collection of Stéphane’s video work is available here.
